The protest which began in the Sierra Leonian northern city of Makeni has reached 5 and medical sources say it may reach 7 because 10 persons are on critical list in hospitals across the city.
The protest resulted from government's plan to remove the only electric power generator of the city to another location which might deprive the city of power. According to government authority, the Minister of Energy, discussions have going on between the national government and the Makeni local authority for the relocation of the generator which would still supply electricity to the city and towns. The central government in Freetown said it had expected the local authority to have discussed this agreement with the citizens of Makeni, but it failed to do so. It is because of this lack of smooth communications, lives are lost - young lives are gone. On the other hand, the police should have known and they do know that in every angry protests, stones are thrown by protesters at police. This, however, does not give police the right to use live bullets at protesters.
