The regional body, ECOWAS is in Bamako the Malian capital to broker peace between President Ibrahim Boubcar Keita and the nation's opposition political parties. The regional leaders were invited following series of protests and counter protests across the West Africa state. Earlier, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was sent there to talk peace between Keita and opposition leaders but no understanding was reached. ECOWAS then decided to send a high power delegation led by Senegal's president, but the opposition is insisting that Keita must resign, something that is difficult to do. The opposition parties have rejected ECOWAS suggestion for a power sharing government.
The Malian protests have left over 500 people dead and still no sign of peace in sight.
Allegations against President Keita include corruption, insecurity, and relentless Islamic insurgency.
