ProtestBlog.org: 02/20. Protests raged for several days against femicide in Mexico with the President AMLO, Lopez Obrador, taking the brunt of the criticism. An average of 10 women a day are killed in Mexico and last year, 2019, set a new record for femicides according to official data.
Protesters, many of them masked, painted the words “femicide state” in blood red on the door of Mexico’s Presidential Palace and then marched through a heavy rain to the offices of a leading newspaper to protest the publication of a gruesome image of a murder victim.
The protests on Valentine’s Day demonstration were led by women especially incensed over the killing of Ingrid Escamilla in Mexico City and the publication of graphic photos of her mutilated body in one of the city’s most prominent newspapers, La Prensa. At least 200 protesters, mostly women, burned vehicles belonging to the press, to call attention to their demands for responsible journalism.
