Ivory Coast Protesters Destroy COVID-19 Treatment Center, Shooting the Messenger in Africa

Updated: Nov 19, 2021 In an ominous sign of the times and the extreme urgency of measures that need to be taken to arrest the spread of COVID-19 in Africa, protesters in the Ivory Coast destroy a detection and treatment center that had just recently been set up. They simply dismantled it and took it away. This, of course, will not make COVID-19 go away or disappear. Rather, it will continue to sweep across Africa unimpeded, with a speed and ferocity that is neither anticipated or observable, wreaking death on people in large numbers, coming like a thief in the night for those that are the least prepared.

Perhaps the most ominous aspect of all of this scenario is that the attack on what little actually exists in terms of anticoronavirus measures in the Ivory Coast, is occuring simultaneously with widespread protest against the current President Ouattara seeking a third term in violation of the constitution, and long recognized principles of alternation in power. Most unfortunately, power grabs are taking place across the globe, with power hungry leaders taking advantage of the pandemic to advance their own political agendas and cement their control, in particular, over the police and the armed forces. This is true, and most unfortunate that it is that this is occurring as the world struggles to defend itself from the most deadly virus attack in more than a century.
