ProtestBlog.org: 2/20. Nearly 200 young people, mostly teenagers, occupied the Capitol building home to the Congress of the United States in mid-February of 2020, briefly shutting down its normal function. The event was described by the protesters as a “teach-in” on the Green New Deal, and a call for lawmakers to immediately adopt the measure. 20 teenagers, the youngest 13, were arrested before the group agreed to abandon the premises. Gus Demerath stole most of the limelight by using the 'f' word to describe when he wanted to see change, “fucking now.”
This incident speaks to several important trends that appear on course to at least challenge the current political status quo in America, if not radically re-shape it. A look at the power of youth in 1968 helps us to understand the way in which young people, once galvanized for a cause, are hard to either stop or ignore. Now, in early 2020, the power of youth is shaping up as a battle hardening front not only for action to help arrest climate change, but also a galvanization of support behind the candidacy for President of Bernie Sanders. Are they one and the same thing in the USA today? Many think so. We call for solidarity with our children, the bravest and brightest among us, who speak and act boldly while their parents tend more to simply go about their everyday lives. Something is happening and it is very drastic, requiring drastic action. Hats off to our children. God Bless America!
